Why the laptop port matters

USB-C describes a connector shape, not one guaranteed feature set. Depending on the computer, a USB-C port may support:

  • USB data at different speeds;
  • DisplayPort Alt Mode for video;
  • USB Power Delivery;
  • USB4;
  • Thunderbolt;
  • some combination of these;
  • data only.

A KVM does not automatically replace a dock

Many laptops still need charging and may need a dock to produce the desired monitor and peripheral connections. A KVM’s job is switching, not necessarily power delivery or laptop expansion.

A combined setup can look like this:

What if you only need to switch HDMI?

An HDMI switch changes which video source reaches an HDMI display. It may be sufficient for a game console, streaming device and computer sharing one monitor or television when each keeps its own controller or peripherals.

Choose an HDMI switch when:

  • video is the only shared resource;
